Diversity and Inclusion
Northwestern holds diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) as a core value. Living up to this value requires a systemic effort involving the entire community. Please see the University's Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion website for more information and resources.
Respectful University Policy
A Working Group was convened and has drafted a tentatively titled Respectful University Policy. This policy is in review by the Policy Review Committee and other key stakeholders. There will be a public comment period, with the goal that the policy will be finalized in FY20.
There are plans to create a new Ombuds office to serve staff, faculty and students to help navigate resources and avenues for resolution of various issues. This was a recommendation from the staff engagement team focusing on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and developed by an Ombuds Program Task Force through extensive stakeholder input and review of successful ombuds offices at other universities.
Staff Affinity Groups
There are also a number of staff affinity groups which aim to enhance the personal and professional development of staff, foster a sense of community and help Northwestern create a workplace where everyone feels belonging and thrives. All members of our community have the opportunity to participate in these blossoming affinity groups to connect, collaborate, and celebrate with others across the University.
Women's Leadership Program
The Women’s Emerging Leadership Development Program, a partnership between HR and the Association of Northwestern University Women (ANUW) will graduate its second cohort in FY20. In support of 150 Years of Women at Northwestern, this program elevates and supports more women/womxn-identified individuals to achieve leadership roles across Northwestern.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Education
There has been a significant investment in training and development, created by Human Resources in partnership with the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion and the community through a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Education Advisory Group made up of staff and faculty across Northwestern. Two highly engaging and interactive workshops, Unconscious Bias and Active Inclusion for Teams, have been piloted and will be made available broadly in FY20 to reach over 400 staff. In addition, to promote a culture of self-reflection, awareness, and learning, a comprehensive playlist of curated online videos, readings, and research has been developed.
The online Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Playlists are available to support you and your teams today to help you in creating a more inclusive environment at Northwestern.
Human Resources in partnership with the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion are exploring ways to introduce diversity best practices into the staff hiring process. More resources and training will be available throughout the year as these practices are introduced.
